Wednesday, October 6, 2021: The Broadway Streetscape Project began on a pedestrian crosswalk and median island on North Broadway, between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue. The purpose of the median island is to slow traffic and provide a safe pedestrian access across Broadway. Due to concerns of the Nyack Fire Department, we are currently working with the Engineers to scale back the island to better accommodate the Fire Department vehicles.
Monday, October 18, 2021: Sidewalk work will start at the corner of North Broadway and First Avenue, between First Avenue and High Avenue on the west side of the street only. Work will continue south on the west side of Broadway to Burd Street and then loop back east from Burd Street to First Ave. The contractor will work into the Fall as long as the weather allows. The project will resume in early Spring for any areas remaining on N. Broadway before moving to South Broadway between Cedar Hill Avenue and Depew Avenue.
Weekly project updates are posted to the village website. Please invite anyone who may not be on the mailing list to sign up here.
Here’s what to expect during sidewalk work:
If you have a vault beneath your sidewalk, please be sure to inform the Village Administrator, Mr. James Slaughter at administrator@nyack-ny.gov or 845-358-3581. Any questions on the project can be directed to Mr. Slaughter.

Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) announced that he has secured $60,000 for the Haverstraw Ambulance Corps to purchase automated CPR devices, stair chairs, and AEDs. Additionally, Skoufis secured $50,000 for the Village of West Haverstraw to purchase a new compressed air system, fill station, and laser-based natural gas detection device for the Village’s Fire Department. The air compressor and fill station will be made available for use by other proximate fire departments, improving emergency service throughout the area.
“I am honored to present this well-deserved funding to enable improved fire and ambulance services throughout Haverstraw and West Haverstraw,” said Senator Skoufis. “These upgrades will not only save lives—they’ll save local taxpayers money in the long-run and keep our emergency service professionals safe in the line of duty.”
“The Haverstraw Ambulance Corps greatly appreciates Senator Skoufis for providing equipment to replace worn and obsolete devices, such as the life saving Lucas CPR Machines, stair chairs, and AEDs,” said Ambulance Corps President William E. Stone. “The Senator has been a partner to our emergency services during the pandemic, including providing N95 masks for our front-line personnel and advocating for improved cell phone reception along the Palisades Interstate Parkway, which has improved our hospital reporting. With over 3,000 responses by the Ambulance Corps this year, lives have been saved with this proper equipment.”
“The West Haverstraw Fire Department and Village of West Haverstraw would like to thank Senator Skoufis for his assistance in securing these funds and his commitment to our community!” said Village of West Haverstraw Mayor Robert D’Amelio. “This type of funding is vital to the Village. It allows us to upgrade crucial, lifesaving equipment at no cost to our taxpayers. We must ensure our volunteers have the necessary equipment to keep our residents and themselves safe during times of crisis.“
“On behalf of the West Haverstraw Fire Department, I would like to thank Senator Skoufis for his support in securing a $50,000 grant for our department,” added West Haverstraw Fire Department Chief Troy Spong. “This grant will allow us to fill our air bottles at our fire station as opposed to having them sent out to be refilled at a cost to taxpayers, and will also allow us to purchase a state of the art gas meter to keep our members safe. Once again, thank you and we look forward to working with Senator Skoufis in the future!”
Senator Skoufis remains committed to supplying emergency service providers and local municipalities with the tools they need to keep residents safe and healthy.
