The type of racist and reprehensible behavior displayed during Wednesday night’s high school basketball game between Pearl River and Nyack has no place in our community and I condemn it in the strongest terms possible. As a former youth coach myself it’s particularly disturbing to see our young people subjected to type of racist abuse.
While the actions of a few do not define the mindset of the many it is up to our entire community to treat others with the respect we all deserve and speak out against any and all acts of intolerance.

NYACK, NY – Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick presented a New York State Senate Empire Award to Carl Cameau, owner of Hudson Spectacles in downtown Nyack, recognizing his contributions to the Rockland County community.
Hudson Spectacles has made a tremendous impact in the community. In 2021, Cameau donated 240 eyeglass frames to survivors of the Evergreen Court Adult Home fire which took the life of volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd and a resident of the adult home. He has instituted a “Vision Scholarship” program in partnership with the Rockland County Pride Center, The Center for Safety and Change, and the Nyack Center, where Cameau offers eye exams and custom glasses for members of those communities that might not be able to afford these necessary services. Over the holidays, Cameau partnered with Kenyatta Jones-Arietta of R2M Realty and bought new toys to support the Nyack Center’s toy drive to support children in the community.
State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick (D-Rockland/Westchester) said, “Mr. Cameau and Hudson Spectacles have quickly become a strong partner in community-building here in Nyack, and our entire community is benefitting from the support he provides to our neighbors. It was an honor to provide Mr. Cameau and Hudson Spectacles with this Empire Award from the New York State Senate.”
“It is truly an honor to be recognized with the NYS Senate Empire Award. I am proud to have a business in Nyack that provides a needed service, and supports our diverse community & events,” said Carl Cameau, owner of Hudson Spectacles. “I feel very thankful for this recognition. It’s an honor to represent my family, Haitian culture, and community especially during Black History Month. My grandparents would be so proud.”
Hudson Spectacles is a community-oriented, family-friendly, full-service optometric practice and boutique optical retailer that provides comprehensive eye exams, DMV vision tests, and partners with local ocular specialists to co-manage patients’ eye health.

Spring Valley, NY – Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski and Assemblyman Michael Lawler, joined by the family of Jared Lloyd and Fire Department members, announced plans to rename a section of Route 45 in memory of the fallen firefighter. Legislation introduced this week by the lawmakers will designate Route 45 between New Hempstead Road and East Eckerson Road as “Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway.”
“Jared Lloyd is a hero for being one of the first on the scene at the Evergreen Court Adult Home fire and helping save the lives of over 100 residents. He made the ultimate sacrifice, and preserving his memory by renaming a major road in his honor is one of the best ways we can honor his heroic actions. When people drive along Route 45, they will always be reminded of that tragic day and the heroism of Firefighter Jared Lloyd,” said Senator Reichlin-Melnick.
“Last year our community suffered the tragic loss of Jared Lloyd when he gave his life helping to save those in harm’s way. As a firefighter for over 15 years he gave back so much to our community, and his heroic actions helped save the lives of so many residents on that day. We must never forget his sacrifice, and by joining together to name this section of Route 45 after him, we will ensure that his legacy lives on,” said Assemblyman Zebrowski.
“Jared Lloyd’s heroic actions last March helped save the lives of over 100 nursing home residents. His loss has had a tremendous impact not only on his family, but on our entire community, county, and state. I’m proud to support this effort to ensure his heroism is never forgotten by enshrining his name on this portion of State Route 45,” said Assemblyman Lawler.
Jared Lloyd, a member of Columbian Fire Engine Co. No. 1 in Spring Valley for over 15 years, died during the rescue effort at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults fire on March 23, 2021 as he was attempting to save residents of the facility.
