The Tuxedo Historical Society will expand programming this fall at a new space that will offer historical exhibits and presentations to the community. Donated by JPMorgan Chase, the former bank branch operated in Tuxedo for many years.
Society president Betty Langberg said, “One of my first jobs after high school was working at this bank. The fact that we can preserve it and use it to tell the story of Tuxedo’s rich history makes this a great gift, and we thank JPMorgan Chase for their generosity.” Formal plans for the new location are pending and will be announced later this year.
The Tuxedo Historical Society was founded in 1982 by concerned residents focused on preserving the rich history of the area. The organization is committed to foster awareness of the community’s heritage through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of materials, as well as presenting programs that document life, past and present in the Town of Tuxedo, and the Village of Tuxedo Park. The former Methodist Church, a gift of the Tuxedo Park Association, serves as the current home of the historical society. The society is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
“The Tuxedo Historical Society upholds, shares and celebrates the vibrancy of this wonderful community and has for decades,” said Brian Huff, Chase, Market Executive, Commercial Banking, Mid-Hudson, Connecticut and the Bronx. “JPMorgan Chase is proud to donate this former branch to support the mission of the Tuxedo Historical Society and provide more opportunities for people to learn about the rich history of the town.”
Board members of Tuxedo Historical Society, representatives of JP Morgan Chase, and local officials will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 29th at 10:30 am.

After a two-year hiatus, Nyack once again welcomes fall and launches a new season of fun for all ages with the SeptemberFest street fair on Sunday, September 11. The Nyack Chamber of Commerce’s legendary fair runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm — rain or shine — in the heart of the village on Main Street and Broadway.
The fair invites families, friends and visitors to browse a rich array of jewelry, clothing, accessories, art, crafts, gifts and great food offered by 200+ vendors and scores of local businesses – a day to enjoy simple pleasures that for two years have been out of reach.
“The Nyack Chamber of Commerce is pleased to once again host our SeptemberFest fair,” said Roger Cohen, President, Nyack Chamber. “The fair is in many ways an introduction to our village. We welcome everyone to SeptemberFest to enjoy a special experience, come back for more, and stay – for a lifetime.”
In addition to sampling wares from hundreds of fair vendors, Fest-goers can enjoy the many boutiques and restaurants that reside year-round in the village. Notably, more than two-dozen local businesses are newcomers who have bravely put down stakes in Nyack just before and during the pandemic.
“The hard times of the past two years toughened us up,” said Maria Luisa Whittingham, co-founder of Nyack Merchants United and owner of Maria Luisa boutique on South Broadway in the ‘So-Bro’ section of the village. “Our small businesses are back even stronger than before, with many new establishments already operating, and new doors ready to open in coming months.”
“This year’s SeptemberFest celebration will showcase everything Nyack has to offer — great shops, great food, outdoor dining, live music and more,” added Mark Reed, Nyack Chamber Board member and fair organizer.
The fair’s live outdoor entertainment roster gives Fest-goers a Nyack ‘sampler’:
— All day: Main and North Broadway
Maureen’s Jazz Cellar presents: The David Budway Quartet featuring Ron Affif, Cameron Brown and Tim Horner
— 1:00 – 2:30 pm: Gazebo on Main
The Scoop: Original Rockland-based band plays fun, timely tunes that will get the crowd moving
— 3:00 – 3:30 pm: Gazebo on Main
Nyack’s Elmwood Playhouse: Singer actors perform a preview of Cole Porter songs from the inaugural show of the theater’s 75th season: Night and Day—Love Lost and Found
— 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Gazebo on Main
Bulletproof Heart: Bandchannels the grit of the ‘90s, with covers from Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries, Weezer, and more
“SeptemberFest is an event, but it’s also an invitation tovisitors and residents to sample the village’s special blend of memorable experiences,” Reed continued. “We want people to come back after our events to enjoy shopping, dining, music, art, theater, hiking, biking and river recreation. Nyack offers it all — in an intimate, safe, walkable riverside community.”
Nyack’s one-of-a kind retailers offer unique merchandise across a broad spectrum of hard-to-find treasures, from antiques, custom jewelry and original art, to hand-made clothing, crystals, vintage vinyl, specialty eyeware and other products — many imported from sustainable sources in the U.S. and around the world.
Among the attractions for shoppers who like to marry a good deal with a good meal is the tempting array of casual eateries and fine dining establishments that put Nyack on the map as a haven for food enthusiasts.
“Nyack is becoming a top destination for great dining in the Hudson Valley,” said Mark Davidoff, Chamber Board member, and director, Rockland Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center. “Our village is a hub for both culinary arts education, and for the final product — the best food on the plate for the discerning diner.”
“For people who want to live, work and spend leisure time in a community that offers great restaurants, unique shops, education, recreation and entertainment, Nyack fits the bill,” said Cohen.
“The 2022 fall fair is in many ways a celebration of our collective resilience,” added Cohen. “Despite the tragedies and challenges we’ve faced in recent years as a community and a nation, we’re looking ahead and building for the future.”
In this context, the village acknowledges the significance of the 9/11 anniversary for so many. After the fair closes, the Village of Nyack will hold its annual Hometown Heroes Remembrance in Memorial Park (6:30 – 7:00 pm). Among the honorees will be the ‘man in the red bandana’ ─ Welles Remy Crowther, the Nyack native who gave his life to save the lives of more than 20 others.

A Family Day to Remember – Reflect – Educate
Volunteers Needed
ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY (September 9, 2022) The Foley Family of Rockland County, along with the 9/11 Education Foundation and the Town of Clarkstown, is hosting a family day event to mark the 21st anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and to bring attention to the ongoing consequences felt by families who are still suffering from the effects. The event, 9/11 – Reflection – Education – Remembrance, is aimed at honoring the heroes lost during and after that tragic day and promoting education, reflection, and remembrance around 9/11. The 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit will be onsite for people to tour throughout the event.
The event will take place on Saturday, October 1, from 11 am to 8 pm, rain or shine, at Germonds Park, 185 Germonds Road, in West Nyack. An opening ceremony will take place at noon. The Foley Family is asking for those interested in helping as volunteers that day to visit the website to find more information on how to support the event – www.911educationfoundation.org.
The Rockland County event will also include onsite vendors and sponsor tables, family activities including corn hole and mini golf tournaments, children’s games and face painting, as well as food trucks and a wine and beer tent. There will also be live music featuring several bands including Hillbilly Parade, Cousins Moran, Midnight Special, Ship of Fools and Big Smooth. All proceeds from the event benefit the 9/11 Education Foundation.
For years, the Foley family has brought the 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit to high schools across Rockland, Orange, and Westchester counties. The 9/11 Mobile Exhibit is a high-tech, 83-foot tractor-trailer that transforms into an educational exhibit. In 2013, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation launched its 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit; a tribute to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) who made the ultimate sacrifice. The tractor-trailer, which transforms into a 1,100 square foot exhibit, is a tool to further educate people about the events of that tragic day and includes artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos, and recordings of first responder radio transmissions. Interactive guided tours are carried out by FDNY firefighters who provide firsthand accounts of the day and its aftermath. The 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit, which has traveled to nearly 50 states and Canada, has welcomed in over 600,000 people to date.
The event is highly personal for the Foley Family. September 11, 2001, changed the Foley family forever, but memories will live on. Tom Foley and his wife Pat rooted themselves in the West Nyack community to raise their family. They instilled in their three children, Joanne, Tommy, and Danny, the importance of hard work, faith, and family. To know them was to know the true meaning of loyalty and commitment.
On September 11, 2001, along with his brothers in Rescue 3, their son Tommy ran towards the unknown at Ground Zero with the sole intent to save others. On that day, he made the ultimate sacrifice doing what he often referred to as “the greatest job in the world.” Tommy lived each day with true intent and unbridled passion, and he made an unforgettable impact on everyone he met.
The younger brother of Tommy, Danny, followed in his brother’s footsteps and also became a NYC firefighter. On September 11, 2001, when Danny realized that Tommy was at the World Trade Center, he made a solemn vow to his parents to find Tommy and bring him home.
Danny, along with his father Tom, spent each day at Ground Zero looking for Tommy; they were tireless in their search. On day 11 of their efforts, the Foley family received their miracle in a different form than they originally prayed. Danny found his brother and brought him home.
Danny and his dad continued Tom’s purpose, grounded in service to others, returning to Ground Zero after Tommy was laid to rest to help other families find a semblance of peace. They, like thousands of others, would feel the effects of these acts of selflessness in years to come.
In the summer of 2016, Tom and his family learned that his time at Ground Zero 15 years prior was responsible for his diagnosis of a 9/11 related leukemia. Three months after that diagnosis Tom passed away surrounded by family, including his daughter Joanne and his son Danny.
Danny built a beautiful family with his wife, Carrie. Together they were blessed with four daughters, Erin, Kiera, Brianne, and Kendall, and then their son, Thomas James, affectionately known to all as TJ, completed their family. Through their marriage Danny and Carrie created a lifetime of memories, as is the Foley way, living life to the fullest, surrounded by family and friends. Danny loved his family fiercely and they were by his side in 2019 when he was diagnosed with 9/11 related pancreatic cancer.
Danny endured his illness with the same determination and bravery that he did 18 years earlier when he ran into the unknown at Ground Zero to find his brother. He fought with unwavering faith and genuine grace, and never questioned his purpose in this life. He loved fully and left a lasting impression on every person he met. Danny passed away on February 22, 2020. To know Tom, Tommy, and Danny was to love them; they could never and will never be forgotten.
