Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) kicked off his annual ‘Skoufis On Your Street’ town hall series last week in Monroe, bringing together a group of about fifty neighbors from Orange County to discuss local funding priorities, legislation, development, and more at Javajo’s Coffee Bar. In coming weeks he’ll host two more town hall events, in Warwick and Middletown.
Skoufis highlighted implementation of the state’s new middle-class property tax rebate program, lowest middle-class income tax rates in 70 years, Monroe-Woodbury School District’s $9.9 million increase in state aid this year, and other key investments in local infrastructure, healthcare, and emergency services before taking questions from the crowd. Constituents spoke about overdevelopment concerns, their experiences with mental health services in New York, and the difference having a strong voice in Albany has made for their Hudson Valley communities. Skoufis also fielded questions about recent controversial Supreme Court decisions.
“While many of our nation’s challenges must be solved at the federal–or even global–level, as a New York lawmaker, I’ll continue to fight inflation, our local tax burden, and moneyed special interests here in Orange County,” said Senator Skoufis. “I am grateful to our constituents for coming out to respectfully voice their priorities. My team is here to serve, and I encourage anyone with a state-level concern–be that interfacing with the Department of Labor or reporting a pothole–to reach out to our office.”
Skoufis will hold two additional town halls in Orange County communities: Middletown on Thursday, August 4 from 5:30pm-7:00pm (Tapped, 22 Henry St Unit #2, Middletown, NY 10940) and Warwick on Thursday, August 11 from 12:00pm-1:30pm (Tuscan Cafe, 5 ½ South St, Warwick, NY 10990). No prior RSVP is required to attend.

RAMAPO, NY – Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick (D-Rockland/Westchester) announced that he has secured $325,000 in state grants for three villages in western Ramapo. The grant funds will be used to improve parks, streamline government technology services, and purchase new sanitation equipment. The grants come through the State and Municipal (SAM) Grants Program.
“The villages of Suffern, Sloatsburg, and Hillburn in Western Ramapo are some of the most beautiful areas of Rockland County. I’m pleased to be able to contribute in a tangible way to improving them,” said Senator Reichlin-Melnick. “I got my start in local government, so I know how important it is to support projects that village residents can enjoy and be proud of for decades to come, and to make sure that our communities are clean and safe.”
The Village of Suffern received a check for $200,000 to purchase a new sanitation truck to make garbage collection more efficient and help keep the village clean. The Village of Hillburn received a check for $75,000 to make repairs to the pond in historic Veterans Memorial Park. The Village of Sloatsburg received a check for $50,000 to go towards new exercise equipment at the village’s community fields and computer and IT upgrades in village hall. The funds that Senator Reichlin-Melnick has delivered help lessen the burden on village taxpayers by having New York State pick up a significant portion of the cost of these projects.
Mayor Michael Curley of Suffern said, “The Village of Suffern would like to thank Senator Reichlin-Melnick for working tirelessly in acquiring these grants for our residents. Together, good government can accomplish great things to make all our lives better, one step at a time.”
Mayor Peter Akey of Sloatsburg said, “The Village of Sloatsburg is extremely excited to be one of the recipients of this generous grant. We have been in the midst of a downtown economic revitalization and now to have the ability to improve our outdoor recreation center is unprecedented. This grant makes it possible for our residents to not only enjoy the community park, but to improve their overall health as well.”
Mayor Joseph P. Tursi of Hillburn said, “Veterans Memorial Park is the centerpiece of our village. Unfortunately, over time the pond liner that was installed back in the 90’s has failed and the pond can no longer hold water. We voiced our concerns to Senator Reichlin-Melnick who understood that our village just doesn’t have the funds to make such an expensive repair. He made every effort possible to procure this grant. On behalf of the village board and the residents of Hillburn, I would like to thank him and we appreciate his steadfastness in assisting in bringing the pond back to life.”

National Council for Workforce Education & JPMorgan Chase Collaborate to Support Suffern

SUFFERN, NY (July 25, 2022) – The National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE) announced on July 14, Rockland Community College has been selected as one of three schools nationwide to receive $210,000 to develop and launch Money Smart Financial Coaching Program, a financial coaching program to improve their students’ financial health and increase their graduation rates. The program is expanding nationally through a $2.5 million investment from JPMorgan Chase.
Rockland Community College was chosen through a competitive process based on the school’s capacity for innovation, staff knowledge and commitment to student success. In addition to Rockland Community College, Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown, NY and Mott Community College in Flint, MI have also been selected and will each receive $210,000. Four other colleges will be selected in 2023, impacting more than 1,200 students around the country.
“Preparing students to be ready for the real world and strengthening their long-term economic security starts with supporting them to better understand how to manage their own finances and plan for their future.” said Kevin Stump, Vice President of Economic Mobility and Workforce Innovation at Rockland Community College.
Dr. Darlene G. Miller, Executive Director of NCWE stated, “As a nonprofit committed to supporting practitioners and workforce leaders to deliver equity-conscious and impactful workforce education programs, we believe that financial wellness programming is critical to addressing financial security barriers for workforce education learners and will serve to mitigate gender and racial equity wealth gaps.”
“Financial coaching is about behavior change and empowering people to take charge of their future by connecting them to resources that drive academic, career and personal achievement,” said Jeanique Druses, Executive Director, Global Philanthropy, JPMorgan Chase. “Rockland Community College is adept at serving students who face barriers to graduation and employment opportunities and this program will build on their ability to meet the needs of their students and help them achieve economic mobility.”
Utilizing a financial coaching program launched by Westchester Community College in 2014, NCWE will provide Rockland Community College with individualized coaching and technical assistance; training, guidance, and support needed to hire staff; and assistance in building a successful, sustainable program. The NCWE Team will assist Rockland Community College in developing a long-term business plan to embed financial wellness into their strategic and budget plans, to support the sustainability of the initiative.
