(Pomona, New York) March 1, 2022 — Down To Earth Living will be hosting a series of workshops in its Bonsai Shack for those new to the craft of Bonsai and those who have already discovered the joys of this ancient art of growing certain trees and shrubs in small, shallow containers. With careful and precise training and pruning, the plant is slowly shaped and manipulated to give the appearance of an older, mature tree. The word Bonsai literally means “ten thousand years,” and it has long been used in Japan to indicate joy, harmony, peace or a wish for long life.
Bonsai Superstar Sergio Cuan will be leading “Bring Your Own Tree” workshops on the following Saturdays: March 12, April 9, June 4 and October 15. There is a limit of eight people per session; $75 per person. To reserve a spot, call John at 845-304-2183. If you don’t already have a tree, Down to Earth Living has hundreds in stock to choose from. A 10 percent discount will be offered on all trees for participants in each workshop.
The Bonsai Shack will also be the site of the company’s third annual spring gala on April 2 from 9 am to 5 pm. Celebrated Italian Bonsai Master Mauro Stemberger will be there to answer questions and discuss his craft with customers. There will be hundreds of Bonsai trees available for purchase along with the proper pots, tools, soil and other supplies. Barbecue will also be available for guests and visitors.

(SPARKILL, NY – February 22, 2022) – The Azarian McCullough Art Gallery at St. Thomas Aquinas College is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Rebecca Pry titled “Let Us Disappear into the Plants”. The exhibit runs from Wednesday, February 16th to April 6th, 2022. This new body of work seeks to expand the field of illustrative painting by developing new combinations of shape, color, and form as they leap from the picture plane onto the wall.
Rebecca Pry, a well-known freelance illustrator and designer, has also become recognized for her large-scale mural paintings. Her exhibition at the AMAG will not only feature a new wall mural but also a suite of recent paintings. The new work has snippets of landscapes, intriguing environmental scenes both real and imagined, plants and leaves flowing everywhere and a riotous sense of color. In fact, it is Pry’s smart and playful use of color that makes her work so interesting.
Employing her signature color palette with energetic patterns, Pry’s work throttles between the abstract and the figurative. Often inspired by travel, Pry’s work references the myriad locations of her creative sojourns, such as the deserts of New Mexico and the medinas of Morocco. Duly inspired by the spirit and compositions of David Hockney, Pry’s work takes those cues and moves in her own direction.
Having developed a strong and unique voice in her graphic and illustrative sensibility, Pry charts new and expansive territory for her exhibition at AMAG.
Rebecca Pry lives and works in Warwick, NY. She holds an BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and is an adjunct professor of Design at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Rebecca Pry, Let Us Disappear into the Plants, runs from Wednesday, February 16th to April 6th, 2022.
The Gallery is open Monday 1:00-3:00 PM, Wednesday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, Thursday 3:00-5:00 PM and by appointment.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. (February 22, 2022) – The Associated College Press (ACP) named 12 student-produced collegiate magazines as the “best of the best” last fall. Twenty-four magazines produced at both four-year and two-year institutions representing 17 states made it to the finals; Rockland Community College’s literary arts publication Impulse 2021 received one of the 12 Pacemaker awards.
Through education training and recognition programs for members, the ACP promotes the standards and ethics of good journalism as accepted and practiced by print, broadcast and electronic media in the United States. “The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” executive director Laura Widmer said. “ACP is honored to recognize the best of the best.”
Gary Lundgren, ACP associate director and coordinator of the Pacemaker competition, noted that the quality of the winning collegiate magazines rivals those produced by professionals. “The creativity displayed in the literary arts magazines is incredible — the unique formats and creative designs make the magazines themselves a work of art,” he said.
Impulse is RCC’s annually printed literary and visual arts magazine that features student authors, artists, designers, and photographer. The student magazine club is overseen by co-advisors Kris Dougherty and Eileen MacAvery Kane.
“I am so proud of our Impulse Club and thrilled that Impulse 2021 won an ACP Award,” said RCC Associate Professor and Impulse Co-Advisor Eileen MacAvery Kane. “This is the culmination of a lot of work by so many of our talented students.”
Impulse magazine is a platform for “meaningful artwork, prose and poetry,” said Editor Emiline V. Torrens. “In Impulse 2021, we juxtaposed the romantic illustration of flora and fauna with that of the abstract, surreal and postmodern; somber and resonant poesy with that of philosophical prose. The result was a true collaboration between RCC writers, artists, designers, and photographers.”
To view the virtual magazine, visit issuu.com/emack23/docs/rccimpulse2021. Current RCC students can submit work for this year’s Impulse up until February 20, 2022, by emailing impulsejournal2022@gmail.com.
