Senator Reichlin-Melnick Funds Multi-Sensory Environment Playground for Rockland BOCES
SPRING VALLEY, NY – Senator Reichlin-Melnick recently visited Rockland BOCES to announce that he has secured $75,000 in funding from New York State to fund the installation of the Rockland BOCES Jesse J. Kaplan School Multi-Sensory Environment Playground for students with developmental disabilities. The Senator was joined by school administrators and board members who were eager to share their enthusiasm for the project that is anticipated to be installed later this year.
Senator Reichlin-Melnick said, “I am proud to have secured funding to support this project that will help students make progress in their educational, social-emotional, and therapeutic goals. Achieving educational equity means supporting students with a range of abilities with the tools needed to thrive. I began my career as a teacher, and am passionate about delivering educational equity for all New York students. ”
Rockland BOCES Chief Operating Officer Dr. Amy Albers said, “We are grateful to Senator Reichlin-Melnick for securing funding for this indoor Multi-Sensory Environment Playground. The Senator understands the importance of supporting the educational needs of all students. This playground will help students with Autism, Sensory Integration Disorder, and other challenges build skills for social functioning and independence and improve academic and social outcomes.”
The playground will be accessible to all Jesse J. Kaplan students, as well as summer school for special needs students from schools across the region that do not have summer programs, Camp Venture participants, and other community-based programs.
Senator Reichlin-Melnick Delivers $110K for Youth at the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center
SPRING VALLEY, NY – Senator Reichlin-Melnick recently visited the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center in Spring Valley to announce that he has secured $110,000 in funding from New York State to support the center’s youth programming. He was joined by several board members and young people who were eager to share their enthusiasm for the inspiring work happening every day at the center.
Senator Reichlin-Melnick said, “I am proud to have secured funding to support youth programming at the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center. Their mission to help build the Beloved Community envisioned by Dr. King is exactly what we need more of in Rockland.”
Nathan Mungin, Executive Director of the Center said, “Senator Reichlin-Melnick is always ready to help–whether it’s pitching in for a holiday toy drive or a neighborhood clean-up, honoring community leaders, or supporting our youth programming with this generous grant. We are grateful to the Senator for his partnership in helping us further our mission to serve the community.”
The Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center provides youth programming after school, on weekends, and during school vacation days to ensure that young people have a safe and supportive place to be that enhances their education. The Center is expanding beyond their indoor footprint, having recently purchased two vacant lots across the street that they are developing to be an outdoor community gathering space.
Schumer, Gillibrand & Jones announce $2.9 Million Title V Grant for RCC
ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. — Today, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and U.S. Representative Mondaire Jones (D-NY) announced $2,960,808 in federal funding for Rockland Community College (RCC). The funding was allocated through the Title V program, which provides resources for Hispanic-serving institutions to expand educational opportunities and enhance programs, fasciitis, and equipment for students. This is one of the largest grants allocated for RCC in the history of the institution.
“Rockland Community College is leading the pack when it comes to giving Hudson Valley residents the tools and education they need for good paying careers, and now thanks to this major federal boost more underserved students will finish their degrees and succeed in the workforce,” said Senator Schumer. “I am proud to deliver this $2.9 million award to RCC to better prepare students for the future and help the Hawks soar higher than ever before.”
“Investing in our institutions of higher education like Rockland Community College is imperative for providing all members of the community with access to a top-flight education,” said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “Our state’s institutions of higher learning provide New York and Rockland County with a more highly-skilled workforce that can compete in the global job market, and this kind of federal funding will help bolster our statewide economy in the long term.”
“RCC continues to be a beacon of high quality, affordable education in Rockland County. I’m proud to announce this funding that will bolster important programs to ensure student success in the classroom and in their future ahead,” said Congressman Mondaire Jones.
“What an honor it is for Rockland Community College to receive a third Title V grant. This is testament to our dedicated faculty, staff, and students,” said Dr. Susan Deere, Officer-in-Charge at RCC. “This award will help RCC implement an Accelerated Studies in Associated Programs (ASAP) model, which will support our students by providing services that will help to improve completion rates. This funding will also support our professional development and data infrastructure. I want to thank our federal government partners for their critical work in helping RCC obtain this important funding.”
This grant will be used to fund the Realizar en RCC project, which aims to increase accessibility and improve outcomes for RCC students. The project includes the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) designed to increase the number of students who complete their degree by 150% over 3 years. With this funding, RCC will expand its student services and career readiness programs, strengthen infrastructure and data-utilization and provide faculty and staff professional development and training opportunities around informed and holistic student advising, and greater data literacy.
Reichlin-Melnick & Zebrowski Host Unveiling of Signage for Firefighter Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway
ROCKLAND, NY – Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, gathered with the parents of Jared Lloyd, elected officials and local volunteer firefighters to unveil signage renaming a portion of Route 45 after firefighter Jared Lloyd.
Bill S8298a/A9270, sponsored by Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, officially designating a portion of the state highway system in Rockland county as the “Firefighter Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway,” passed unanimously in both legislative chambers this spring.
Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick said, “The people of Rockland County will always remember Jared Lloyd’s service and sacrifice. Permanently renaming this portion of Route 45 Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway honors him and will inspire others to serve their community. All of us in government must continue to work to strengthen code enforcement so we prevent another tragedy like this in our community.”
“In March of 2021, Rockland County experienced the tragic loss of Jared Lloyd as he fought one of the largest fires in our county’s history. We will never forget his heroic actions that saved so many lives and his endless dedication to our community, having served as a firefighter for 15 years. Renaming this stretch of road in his honor is a way to recognize his sacrifice and ensure his memory lives on,” said Assemblyman Ken Zebrowki.
Jared Lloyd’s mother, Sabrail Davenport, thanked the legislators for their efforts to rename the roadway in honor of her son, and said, “These signs confirm the legacy that Jared is leaving for his sons to be proud of and the sacrifices he made for 16 years as a volunteer firefighter. As you drive down Route 45, make sure that you thank our son Jared Lloyd for his courageous service.”
President of Columbian Fire Engine Company, Reginald Anderson, reminded all present that, “On that tragic day Jared didn’t lose his life fighting the fire, he gave his life saving lives. That is the type of person he is. I don’t say that is the type of person he was. I say that is the type of person he is, because in each one of our hearts, he still lives.”
Firefighter Jared Lloyd gave his life in the line of duty during the tragic fire at Evergreen Court in March 2021. His brave actions and the actions of his fellow firefighters saved over 100 lives.
Also present at today’s sign unveiling were Assemblyman Mike Lawler, County Executive Ed Day, County Legislator Toney Earl, Rockland County Office of Fire & Emergency Services Director Christopher Kear, representatives from the Hillcrest Fire Department and several of Jared Lloyd’s friends and family members. Members of Columbian Fire Engine Company arrived in the Tanker 17, a fire apparatus that had special meaning for Jared as he served on the committee that designed it for his company.
