I have been a family law, personal injury and general litigation practitioner throughout his career. Some of the notable cases I’ve handled included: Family Law: After a young boy witnessed his father kill his mother with a baseball bat and then go to prison for the crime, the grandparents fought a long custody battle over the child. I helped the mother’s parents obtain custody. Personal Injury: I helped obtain a settlement for the parents of a young man with Down Syndrome who, due to the inattention of one of his aides, swallowed a toy and died. Criminal: Defended a Mexican farm worker against robbery charges in a case of mistaken identity when he was accused of being a member of a gang that robbed a jewelry store. The truly innocent man was acquitted by a jury of the charges. Supreme Court Justices handle cases where misfortune or tragedy had occurred. I have spent my career working for individuals and families and helping them through the Court process. I have handled very serious matters involving millions of dollars and much smaller, but just as important to those involved, matters. I have also been an advocate for the disabled. I most recently was on the executive committee of Abilities First, Inc., a not-for-profit agency providing educational, vocational and residential services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Prior to that, I was on the board of directors of the Down Syndrome Association of the Hudson Valley. I have been married to my wife Mary for 29 years and we have a beautiful 23-year-old daughter, Anna.

Senator Skoufis Touts Combined $149K for Watershed Projects
Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) touted a combined $148,554 in grant funding awarded to four area projects within New York State’s Hudson River watershed communities. Announced last week, the funding will enable:
- A regional-scale vulnerability assessment by Riverkeeper, which will define climate-related vulnerabilities to water bodies in area municipalities ($50,000)
- A county-wide natural resources inventory and municipal toolkit by Ulster County ($46,554).
- A waterfront park natural resource inventory and assessment by the Village of Highland Falls, helping to develop a master plan for land owned by Scenic Hudson ($12,000); and,
- Milton Landing Park’s accessible kayak launch, a project by the Town of Marlborough encouraging local and regional recreational enjoyment of the river ($40,000).
The grants are funded by the State’s Environmental Protection Fund and administered by the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program.
“I am thrilled to see our local communities proactively responding to the realities of climate change through this series of innovative projects,” said Senator Skoufis. “Recent storms have reminded us of the fragility of our systems and infrastructure, and we must do all we can to prepare our communities for our new climate future, as well as building sustainable recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike.”
TIME TO CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS AND CHECK YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLY KITS, SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS
NEW CITY, NY, – Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert remind residents to set their clocks back one hour as Daylight Savings time ends at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 7th. Along with changing your clocks, this is also a good time to check your emergency supply kit and your smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm.
“It’s very important to be prepared for emergencies because they can happen with little or no warning. That is why having an emergency supply kit and a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm is so important,” said Dr. Ruppert.
Have a two-week supply of food and water stored in your home, with at least one gallon of water per person per day. Choose foods that are ready to eat, such as peanut butter and canned beans, fruits, and vegetables. Remember your pets too! They need their own food and water. Your emergency supply kit should have a well-stocked first-aid kit, including medications to reduce fever and pain, and a fever thermometer. The supply kit should also contain flashlights, a hand-operated can opener, a wind-up or battery-operated radio or TV, batteries, and copies of important documents. Depending on your family’s needs, you may also need other supplies.
Stock up on canned vegetables or batteries when there is a sale. Share “bulk” items with a friend, co-worker, or neighbor who can serve as your “preparedness buddy.” Once your emergency supply kit is complete, don’t be tempted to “borrow” from it the next time you run out of batteries or need beans for a recipe. Remember: your emergency supply kit is for emergencies!
Make sure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in good working order and that they are not expired. If needed, change the batteries in these alarms when you change your clocks. Replace all smoke alarms when they are ten years old or if they don’t respond when tested. All new smoke alarms should be replaced with the new 10-year sealed smoke alarm that never needs a battery replacement. To find out how old a smoke alarm is: the date of manufacture is located on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced ten years from that date. For carbon monoxide alarms, always check the manufacturer’s instructions and expiration date. The Health Department’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program can assist low to moderate-income residents and seniors at no charge, with battery changes and alarm replacements, as supplies last.
