First Case of Orthopoxvirus/Monkeypox in Rockland County
No Risk to County Residents
New City, NY, – Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert announce that a county resident has been diagnosed with Orthopoxvirus/Monkeypox.
Testing for orthopoxvirus was conducted at the NYS’s Wadsworth Center Laboratory. This confirmed case is limited to one individual who has not had any contact with anyone locally and poses no risk to county residents.
As of June 28, a total of 61 confirmed orthopoxvirus/monkeypox cases — a designation established by CDC — have been identified in New York State including 55 in New York City, 4 in Westchester County, 1 in Sullivan County and 1 in Chemung County.
Monkeypox is a rare viral illness that does not usually cause serious illness but may result in hospitalization or death. Monkeypox cases in this outbreak have involved a rash (often in the genital and peri-anal regions), and may also include other symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pain when swallowing, before or after the rash appearance. Most infections last two to four weeks.
Those who experience symptoms consistent with monkeypox, such as characteristic rashes or lesions, should contact their health care provider for a risk assessment. This includes anyone who traveled to countries where monkeypox cases have been reported or has had contact with a someone who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed monkeypox.
“Following measles and COVID-19, I want to assure residents that our Department of Health is well prepared to track and manage this situation and respond accordingly,” said County Executive Ed Day.
“The Rockland County Department of Health is closely monitoring this case, which is limited to just one individual. There is no identified risk to any county residents. As we have shown with COVID-19, staff at our local department of health remain vigilant and ready to respond to communicable diseases of all types, and promptly inform our residents to safeguard their health,” said Dr. Ruppert.
County residents can learn more about Monkeypox at the New York State Department of Health’s website at health.ny.gov/monkeypox.
Roadway honoring late County Clerk Piperato unveiled
Section of Route 304 officially renamed after former County Clerk Paul Piperato

ROCKLAND, NY – Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Assembly Member Ken Zebrowski were joined by several members of the Piperato family and fellow public officials for the unveiling of the signage declaring Route 304 in New City between Ridge Road and State Route 9W as Rockland County Clerk Paul Piperato Memorial Highway.
Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick said, “Paul Piperato was a wonderful public servant and a wonderful human being who left us far too soon. Everyone who met him loved him, and his compassion and dedicated service improved the lives of so many veterans, new citizens, and countless residents who continue to benefit from his innovations as a County Clerk.”
The Senator continued, “I am proud to have passed legislation to rename this section of Route 304 which connects Paul’s hometown of Haverstraw with New City, where he served for so many years as our County Clerk. Naming this road in his honor pays tribute to a remarkable career and will hopefully inspire future generations to learn about and strive to emulate his career of public service.”
“Throughout his life, Paul Piperato was known as the nicest man in politics. His years of service to our county were a testament to his dedication to our community, and we continue to feel his loss each day in Rockland County. This section of Route 304, renamed in his honor, will ensure that his legacy continues to live on,” said Assembly Member Ken Zebrowski.
Paul’s niece, Alexa Piperato, spoke on behalf of the family expressing appreciation for the public acknowledgement of her uncle’s long career serving the people of Rockland. Rockland County Clerk Donna Silberman, who served as Deputy County Clerk during Mr. Piperato’s tenure also shared heartfelt remarks.
Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Assembly Member Ken Zebrowski sponsored the legislation to rename the roadway following Piperato’s passing in May 2020. Paul Piperato was well known by Rockland County residents for his 30-year career in government, including 16 years as County Clerk.
