Rockland Community College Lady Hawks Volleyball Team Nabs Historic Win, Secures Spot at 2021 NJCAA DIII Volleyball National Championships

Suffern, NY. (November 5, 2021) With a 3-0 win over theCommunity College of Rhode Island in the Northeast District Tournament last Saturday, the Rockland Community College women’s volleyball team made history, advancing for the first time ever to compete in the 2021 NJCAA DIII Volleyball National Championships. The Championships will be played in Rochester, Minnesota, at the Rochester Regional Sports Center, from November 11-13, 2021. Twelve teams from around the country will be featured.

The Lady Hawks, now Northeast District B champs, finished their season with an overall 15-6 record. They have been named the 11th seed for the championship, and will face off first against the Butler County Pioneers (16-1), from the Mid-Atlantic B District.

During Saturday’s win, Rockland displayed a full team effort to defeat the Region 21 champion Knights of Community College of Rhode Island. Region award winners Brianna Almonte and Gabrielle Faulcon led the way for RCC, each with 15 kills during the match. Kendra Faulcon led both teams in assists with 27. By earning a spot at Nationals, first-year Head Coach Sara Hayward has led Rockland to its most successful season in school history.

“The women’s volleyball team has had an amazing season. The team’s first-ever trip to the NJCAA DIII National Championship Tournament is a testament to the hard work they put in each day,” said Ed Bajor, Director of Athletics & Arena Management for RCC. “First-year Head Coach Sara Hayward has done an incredible job with this team in such a short amount of time. Considering that we didn’t have a season last year due to the pandemic makes this accomplishment that much more impressive!

“The women’s team had a dominant season in the region—they earned their spot at nationals with a lot of hard work and great coaching,” he added.

Jolie Santiago, 19, a New City resident who is middle hitter for the Lady Hawks, felt the excitement first-hand. “I’m so proud of my team,” she said. “We are the smallest team in the league and two of us are even playing with injuries but it’s our heart and teamwork that has made it possible for us to get to nationals and compete against the best teams in the country.” Santiago is optimistic about the team’s chances for next week: “I know we can win this!”

Nanuet Chamber presents Jim Flynn Community Service Award to Mike Carey

The Nanuet Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of the entire Nanuet Community, is proud to present the 2021 Jim Flynn Community Service Award to Mike Carey.


Mike is an outstanding member of the Nanuet community who has served as a friend, a leader, and a mentor for so many people in our community. Mike’s natural and friendly leadership style has helped to shape our Hamlet for the better. . He has been a resident of Nanuet for over 52 years. He attended St. Anthony’s Parish School and served as an altar boy for the Parish Church and went on to attend Albertus Magnus High School and was a celebrated athlete, pitching for their baseball team. Mike went on to college playing baseball for Seton Hall University and Dominican College.


Mike’s relationship with baseball led to his making lifelong friendships. Being the father of four daughters, with softball in their future, he became actively involved with the Nanuet Little League. Coaching and mentoring many children. He has provided endless guidance to parents as well as in support of their children. Mike is known to share his expertise and share countless hours of practice on and off the field. He is always negotiating gym time on the off-season and is often found at Nanuet Little League fields from early spring until late fall. He has served as a coach, manager and executive Vice President for Nanuet Little League for over 16 years. He is also a Rockland County District and Regional Administrator and provides support to the Challenger Little League, working to impart his passion and provide a positive softball experience for their players.


Mike is a founding member of CUPON of Greater Nanuet. He has also volunteered his services in an official and unofficial capacity for many non-profit community organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Nanuet Chamber of Commerce, Nanuet and Beyond, St. Anthony’s Parish, Lions Club of Nanuet, Nanuet Civic Association, and local Girl Scouts and Boy Scout troops.


We are very proud to present Mike Carey with the first Jim Flynn Community Service Award to celebrate and honor his leadership and volunteer efforts to improve Nanuet for all of us.

The Greater Nanuet Chamber of Commerce was formed not only for the purpose of promoting and supporting businesses in the town of Nanuet, but to also create a vibrant, prosperous, and strong community.


Two years ago, we decided to also recognize an outstanding member of the community who has made a difference in Nanuet through his or her volunteer efforts so we created a community service award to be presented annually at our Street Fair.Recently, as many of you know, we lost an outstanding member of our close-knit Nanuet community. His everyday actions embodied the meaning of community service. Not only did he support several community organizations, including the Chamber, the Nanuet Civic Assoc, and CUPON, but he was also the voice and the face of our community at many town meetings, school board meetings, political campaigns gatherings, and anywhere else he could share his heart and love for the Nanuet Community.His commitment to our community came through everything he did. And as many of us can attest to, he was also there for us personally, lending a hand wherever and whenever he could.
